Planing the Hull
Frames beveled, stringers planed. DriftingDonkey getting ready for hull plating
Planing the hull went pretty smoothly. I started taking down the bulk of the excess wood on the frames and stringers with the electric hand plane. Since the stringers were let in to the exact depth and beveled into the frames for a nice flow, they also showed the bevel for the frames.
Once I got pretty close to the final shape, I switched over to the hand planes. Long strokes with the planes for longitudinal flow always checking across the stringers and on the diagonal for low or high spots.
I was very happy with the result. One thing that made this job a lot easier was the quality of the wood. It is absolutely essential to have very fine grained 1/4 sawn wood for the stringers to avoid tear out.
